Biography
Pieter Verdegem is a senior researcher at the Research Group for Media and ICT (MICT), Ghent University (UGent), Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT). He holds a master’s degree in Communication Sciences (UGent, 2001) and in E-Communication Studies (KUL, 2002). He started his career at De Standaard Online (online newspaper), and within VUM Media (now Corelio) he also worked for De Standaard (newspaper) and VUM Regie (the commercial department of VUM-Corelio). Afterwards, Pieter was e-communications expert within the Flemish Government (Sciences & Innovation Department – Team Technology & Innovation). In 2004, he changed job to get involved in the start of the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT). Pieter became researcher at the newly started Research Group for Media & ICT (MICT), affiliated to the Communications Department, Ghent University (UGent).
Pieter is involved in several IBBT and other research projects. His research mainly focuses on ICT & Society: e-government, digital divide/e-inclusion, ICT policy & regulation, social aspects of the information society. He obtained a Ph.D. (2009) on government strategies in the information society, particularly e-government and e-inclusion.
In 2011 Pieter will be a year on leave at Ghent University as he is affiliated to the Department of Informatics and Media (Uppsala University, Sweden) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Together with Prof. Christian Fuchs he will be working on the analysis of information society policies.
